Walter Levy was an officer that Caputo was at Quantico with. He was killed when he attempted to retrieve one of his men. He did so after already being wounded by a land mine. His death was different because he tried to save a man who was already dead, but the more Caputo thought about it, he realized that Levy would have attempted to save the body anyway. This made the war very personal for Caputo. It made the war a real threat where death could happen to anyone.

It was early in the war and they were close friends, so it put an effect on him.
